June 11th

Dear Jones-

Today you had your first fall. It wasn’t too bad, but it really freaked out your parents. It was related to a certain toy and I have banned that toy. You were comforted easily and went about the rest of your day as normal. Now you have a small bruise to show off to your nonexistent friends.

Yesterday evening you went swimming with dad and me. You made friends at the pool again and were held by two strangers. An older woman and a young girl. I’m starting to wonder if I shouldn’t pass you around like a collection plate. I can’t help it. The Thai people are just too friendly.

Here is a typical day for us in Ayuthaya: wake at 6, breakfast, family playtime, Jones’ independent playtime, nap. Dad leaves to “work” around this time and you and I spend the afternoon playing with your toys on our bed, walking around downstairs, talking with Anne and Meh Ow, taking bucket baths, going to the pool and teaching you new skills. When dad gets home (sometimes late) he plays with you and then its bath and bed. If its really late, you’re already in bed before he gets home. If dad doesn’t have to work, we find fun activities around the city. Riding elephants is on our to-do list. Life here really isn’t that different from home.

I know this entry is getting long, but I want to tell you a funny story before I forget it. You have become a wiggler extraordinaire. You twist and kick and fight during diaper changes and when getting dressed. I find this difficult, but I deal with it. A few days ago Anne was babysitting you while I was out running an errand. I returned home to find you playing on the floor completely naked. The first thought that ran through my mind was, “We are definitely in Thailand.” In broken English, Anne explained, “Jone no like diaper.” I imagined you struggling and squawking, all the while smarty-pants Anne not knowing what to do. Thank goodness you didn’t poop all over the floor.

Love,

Mom
